The Art of Storytelling

Everyone has a story to tell. What’s yours?

That’s the strap line for the BBC My Story competition. This competition (linked to the raw campaign) aims to encourage adult literacy and get people reading. It’s backed up by a great website which already has loads of stories on line to inspire people, writing tips and lots of other free, downloadable resources to use with learners.

My Story is a storytelling and creative writing project for people over the age of 18. Entrants are asked to tell a true, personal story and send in to share with others.  The best stories will be made into short films and shown on BBC One in summer 2010 and winners will see their experiences published as paperback books.

Entrants need to write a:

  • Short description (max 20 words)
  • Summary (min 50, max 300 words)
  • Story (min 300, max 1500 words)

This is an excellent tool for literacy tutors.  You could create an internal competition as a project for a literacy class as well as getting clients to submit their stories to the competition.  How about focusing on their story of unemployment, immigration, personal triumph ...

It really is worth checking out: www.bbc.co.uk/mystory.   You may even want to tell your own story!
