Star Awards 2009

Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) have just launched the Star Awards for 2009 to recognise and reward the “unsung heroes of the further education (FE) and skills sector”.  People in the FE and skills sector make a big difference to the lives of individuals, and this is one way that they can be publicly recognised.  The awards were launched in 2003 and are now well established and highly regarded.

The awards are open to anyone in a teaching or non-teaching role. Some of the awards can be given to teams of people to recognise the achievements of a particular group. The categories are:

  • Teaching, training and learning practitioner
  • Skills for Life
  • Response to learners’ needs
  • Engaging employers
  • Workforce development
  • Support role (not learner support)
  • Learning support
  • Leadership
  • Innovation
  • Lifetime achievement

There was a great deal of interest from learners in last year’s awards, so there will be two teaching, training and learning practitioner awards this year – one nominated by learners and one nominated by their peers.

The document below shows who the categories are open to and what sort of information you would need to consider when nominating the individual (no more than 75 word answer per question). In all cases you have to show how their work shows a high level of commitment to promoting equality and diversity. The judges are apparently looking for the WOW factor that shows “extra commitment and dedication with fresh, innovative or particularly successful approaches.”

Nominations can be made by learners, colleagues, managers, or anyone else just by visiting the site and requesting a nomination pack.  Nominations close on 12th June, so there is plenty of time to spread the word and get your nominations in.
