Preventing Workplace Harassment

BIS have produced a booklet containing guidance on preventing workplace harassment and violence.  This could be a useful tool for providers in preparing clients for the work place and could be used to develop research projects, team projects, session delivery etc.

The guidance, available to download from www.workplaceharassment.org.uk, provides practical help and support to employers and employees in  line with  Europe-wide agreement between employers’ organisations and unions to:

  • raise awareness and increase understanding of employers, workers and their representatives of workplace harassment and both internal and third party violence; and
  • provide employers, workers and their representatives with a framework of response to identify, prevent and manage problems of harassment and all forms of violence at work.

The definitions used are:

  • Harassment - someone is repeatedly and deliberately abused, threatened and / or humiliated in circumstances relating to work.
  • Violence - assault in circumstances relating to work.

It is recognised that these acts can be carried out by employers, employees as well as service users/members of the public.

The guide is a collaboration by the CBI, Partnership of Public Employers (PPE) and the TUC and has the backing of HSE, ACAS and BIS.
