Numeracy in the Spotlight

LSIS have released an update to the numeracy section of the Excellence Gateway.  Numeracy in the Spotlight provides background information for staff and managers including workforce development as well as useful resources which you can use directly or as a basis for your own resource development.  Of particular note are:

  • Numeracy subjects built around health are quite useful, particularly in light of the questions now being asked in the new Common Inspection Framework.
  • Embedding ideas - a simple but useful approach to embedding numeracy.
  • Links to the embedded learning materials - in our experience these are under utilised by providers and are an excellent resource.

Other links include:

Money Matters to Me is an on line learning resource developed by NIACE.  It's aimed at 25-50 year olds and there does appear to be some useful resources on it.  However, you may find some of it a bit childish, but check it out anyway.  Have a play with the interactive ATM!  If you don't use the site directly with your clients, it may inspire you to develop your own resources.

Move On have a new Money Management resource which looks quite useful.  It provides a session plan and activities for personal budgeting and credit card interest among other things.  You need to be registered and logged in to Move On to access the resource.

There is still much work to do on improving the skill levels of clients as well as embedding learning and hopefully this resource will support you in your endeavours.
