New Equality Bill - Simple Interpretation

On 27 April, the government published the Equality Bill which is expected to come into force in autumn 2010.  It will build on existing legislation by:

  • requiring public bodies to fulfil two new duties (socio-economic and treating people fairly and equally)
  • strengthening the rights of older people
  • requiring business to report on gender pay
  • increasing positive action
  • extending discrimination laws to protect carers, family and friends and better protect disabled people

Nine major pieces of legislation and around 100 other measures are to be replaced by a single Act written in plain English to make it easier for individuals and employers to understand their legal rights and obligations.

The government have worked with Inspired Services to produce an easy to read booklet about the new bill which is really simple to understand.  It could easily be used as a resource by training providers within Skills for Life classes to explore equality and diversity issues.  You can find the booklet below.
