National Apprenticeships Week

This week (23 to 27 February) is officially National Apprenticeship Week. Throughout the week there will be events and awareness raising activities across the country. You can find a list of national and sector activities on the apprenticeships website with a daily breakdown of what is going on. Click here to visit the website for a whole range of information about the world of apprenticeships.

For those of you who have been on a desert island in the last couple of weeks, Sir Alan Sugar is fronting the LSC’s TV ad campaign. Even if you aren’t an “Apprentice” fan – you have to appreciate the clever advertising.  Sir Alan will also be participating in interactive forums for employers (with John Denham and Ed Balls) this Thursday and throughout March. There still appear to be places available in Newcastle (12 March 2009) and Birmingham (19 March 2009) if you want to join in.

This week is also the final week for nominations of the Apprenticeship Awards 2009, to “recognise and reward employers and apprentices who are successfully using Apprenticeships to improve their business performance and tackle skills shortages, whose contribution to the workplace has exceeded their employers’ expectations and resulted in measurable benefits or who have overcome difficulties to succeed through their Apprenticeships.” So if you know a deserving employer/employee to nominate then visit the website before Friday.

In light of the current state of the economy, it is essential that everyone does all they can to promote opportunities for young people, as well as for employers to access training for their staff. The contracts for the Apprenticeship Expansion Programmes should be announced any time now, which could expand the programme to help even more people. So as Sir Alan would say, “Make Things Happen”!
