Merge of BERR and DIUS

It doesn't seem that long ago that the Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR) replaced the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) - actually it's just over three years ago!  But they're on the move again.

Today the Government has created a new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills by merging BERR and DIUS (Department for Innovation University & Skills). With a headline of New Department ... to lead fight against recession and build now for future prosperity, today's announcement will obviously be over shadowed by political events both at the polling stations and Westminster.  But we aren't a political commentary site, so we'll steer clear of that subject!

The aim of the merger between the two existing departments is to join up some of the thinking within government between job creation, encouraging enterprise and innovation, and developing skilled people, which is actually quite a logical step!  BERR and DIUS were already working closely together (see the recent New Industries, New Jobs paper) so this merge will hopefully improve the joined up approach going forward.
