Literacy Websites

Literacy is the name of the game this week, so anyone involved in that arena of welfare to work and skills development may like to read on.

A new website has been launched by the National Literacy Trust which has a host of information to support practitioners and promote literacy.  On first glance the site seems very much focused on young people but it's worth looking through the extensive links in the resources section for ideas as well as practical resources.  We aren't sure the search function works though.  After typing "event" into the resources search, the result was "no results found for hairy maclary activities".

The Words for Work project is interesting but frustratingly this is just aimed at schools.  The NLT recognises that people need speaking and listening skills to get on in work, but we all know that there are many adults who still need to develop these skills.  It's great that young people are getting these opportunities but in our view there is still limited support for adults in this practical approach.  The Skills Assessment in the resources section may be of interest.

The NLT have also today launched a Vote for Literacy campaign to get all political parties to prioritise literacy from May 2010.

There is also a link to the Reading for Life website which has some good ideas about  developing reading and writing skills.  One that leapt out at us was for people to write the match report when they've watched their football team's latest match on BBC 606 Sports Forum.  That idea could go across many subject areas and doesn't need to be linked to sports, but a nice idea for clients to see their own words on line adding to the sense of achievement.

If anyone finds anything particular great and wishes to share it, please let us know and we'll post it as a news item.
