Latest Unemployment Figures

Unemployment is still going in the wrong direction. Figures released today shows a 0.7% increase on the quarter ending July from the previous three months. This is 2.3% up on the same time last year. Unemployment in July stood at 7.9% (2.47 million).

The claimant count in August was up 0.1% in month and 2.1% up on the same time last year.

The interesting figures, particularly as we go into flexible New Deal in less than two weeks time, are the number of claimants in New Deal groups.  There are 143,800 New Deal clients (up 14,200 in month). The breakdown is:

  • NDYP clients are 88,700 (up 9,500 in month)
  • 25+ clients of 18 months to 2 years unemployed are 33,100 (up 4,100 in month)
  • 25+ clients over 2 years unemployed are 22,000 (up 600 in month)

We won’t depress you with any other figures. You can see them all for yourself at www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBase/Product.asp?vlnk=1944

There is a piece of good news in the East Midlands where they are bucking the trend and unemployment has dropped 0.1% since April 2009! And Holland is the best place to live and work with a 3.4% unemployment rate.
