Labour Market Statistics - November

We’re getting pretty tired of doom and gloom so are putting the positive spin on the unemployment figures this month.

The Labour Market Statistics released this morning show:

  • The rate at which unemployment is increasing has dropped. There was only a 0.1 per cent increase in the last quarter from the previous quarter.
  • Unemployment in the same period dropped by 0.5 per cent in the West Midlands, 0.3 per cent in the North East and 0.2 per cent in Yorks & Humber. These areas have higher unemployment than elsewhere but they are recovering quicker.
  • Those unemployed over 24 months dropped in the same period by 1.1 per cent.
  • Employment by age figures show an increase in the number of 25-34 year olds and 50+ age groups in work.
  • There were 0.4 per cent more vacancies in October than in September - Distribution, Hotels & Restaurants, Transport & Communications and Manufacturing are all improving.
  • There was a drop of 2.4 per cent in the quarter of people being made redundant.

So maybe the glass is more than half full?

Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold.  (Maurice Setter)
