Increase to National Minimum Wage 2009

New National Minimum Wage rates will take effect in October 2009.  The government has approved recommendations from the independent Low Pay Commission, and the new rates announced this week are:

  • Low paid workers aged 22 and over - £5.80 an hour (increase of 7p)
  • 18 to 21 year olds - £4.83 an hour (increase of 6p)
  • 16 and 17 year olds - £3.57 an hour increase of 4p)

The increase will take effect in October 2009.

The government has also accepted the LPC recommendation that the adult rate of the minimum wage should be extended to 21 year olds.  This will be implemented from October 2010.

Interesting fact - the National Minimum Wage has now been in place for 10 years.  The main rate of the NMW was £3.60 when it was launched.
