Freud on Fraud

This week has seen the publication by DWP of Freud's proposals for Tackling fraud and error in the benefit and tax credits systems.

A summary of the proposals includes:

  • employing private sector firms on a payment by results basis (with a where appropriate proviso);
  • enhanced checks and tougher sanctions;
  • recruiting over 200 new anti-fraud officers to sanction a further 10,000 fraudsters every year;
  • encouraging informants by offering rewards;
  • mobile regional fraud taskforce;
  • increasing asset seizures and introducing three-strike rules.

There will also be a role for Big Society partners to help educate and support customers in getting their claims right, but there isn't really much detail about who BSPs are.
