Free Mobile Calls for Benefit Claimants

What a great headline!  It's a classic, and is totally misleading.

DWP have announced that as of 18 January, around seventy of DWP's 0800 numbers will be free from BT land lines or mobile phones on the O2, Orange, Tesco Mobile, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone networks.  People on other networks will still be charged by the operator.

DWP estimate that 9 million phone calls are made to its 0800 numbers each year from mobile phones.  So, bearing in mind how long many calls are to benefit helplines, the big question is how are the mobile operators going to recoup this substantial lost revenue?  Time will tell!

In the meantime this is good news for many customers of welfare to work providers and it may be worth publicising in your delivery centres.
