Football Chants - Improving Literacy

The Get On campaign has launched their new Footie Chant competition. Using a fun and familiar concept and capitalising on people’s passions at the start of the football season, the aim is to encourage adults to recognise their literary ability and inspire them to improve their English skills and gain a qualification.

The new season’s competition is launched following the announcement of the winner of the 2008/9 season competition (Terry Cockell - Southend United FC fan).  Fans are being asked to compose an original chant and send it in, or upload it to YouTube.  Lots of learning opportunities there!

We particularly like the comment by football chant poet, Ian McMillan, who says, “There's no point writing a complex chant because it has to be picked up instantly by thousands of people who've got their mouths full of pie!”

We just thought this may inspire literacy tutors and those working with clients on jobsearch and employability skills to use this competition as part of their programme or develop their own similar activities - you could even have inter centre competitions. The Football League Trust is working with the Get On campaign as well as promoting literacy through their community groups at clubs across the country.

The closing date for the competition is 30th December 2009.  So get chanting (click here for info) - good luck!
