Decision Making and Appeals Inquiry

The Work and Pensions Committee have announced an inquiry entitled "Decision making and appeals in the benefits system", and is seeking submissions from interested organisations and individuals.

We know that many providers struggle with providing evidence to support benefit sanctions for clients who repeatedly fail to comply with programme requirements, so thought it was worth publicising this inquiry.

The inquiry is asking question such as:

  • How effective the decision making process is and how it could be improved.
  • Whether the training for DMA staff is adequate.
  • Whether the DMA process is clear.
  • How the appeals system works from the claimant's perspective.
  • Whether the timeframe and support available for appeals is sufficient.

The Committee is seeking written contributions by 10 September 09. Oral evidence sessions will take in the autumn.
