Council Tax Support Consultation

The Department for Communities & Local Government have launched a consultation into the propsed changes for Council Tax support.  This is something that all welfare to work practitioners will see the impact of, and it is worth more than a glance as to what the proposed changes are.

The utlimate aim of the changes is to save money (£500 million a year) with local councils being given the power (or having the buck passed to them) on how they achieve the required saving!  There is an inference that Local Authorities will be more active in helping people back into work to reduce their financial burden as part of this approach. There is good news for low-income pensioners - the Government is NOT going to expect them to work to increase their income. But there are lots of other questions raised by this proposal.

The consultation is quite extensive with response invited on 46 points.  Even if you don't want to answer all of the questions it's important that anyone with an interest has their say.

You can respond to the consultation:

  • by email to: CTB-Reform@communities.gsi.gov.uk,
  • in writing to: Elise Laker, Council Tax Benefit Reform Team, Department for Communities and Local Government Zone 5/H2, Eland House, Bressenden Place London SW1E 5DU
  • by telephone: 0303 444 1331
