Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion 2010

The EU Commission has designated 2010 as the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. The Government has announced its National programme to encourage debate about the challenges faced, reinforce political and public commitment and promote individual and selective responsibilities in the fight against poverty and social exclusion.  The objectives are to:

  • Raise awareness of the causes, prevalence and consequences of poverty and social exclusion.
  • Promoting and facilitating the engagement and participation of a broad range of stakeholders who have a role to play in developing and delivering solutions.
  • Ensuring a lasting legacy, including identification and sharing of good practice and knowledge, and development of effective structures that facilitate ongoing dialogue.

The key thematic challenges in the UK have been identified as child poverty, working age poverty and social exclusion (including overcoming barriers to labour market participation), severe/multiple deprivations and those at most risk of social exclusion and older people and poverty / social exclusion.DWP are inviting proposals for organisations to deliver activities at a local and grassroots level, involving a range of stakeholders that have a role to play in combating poverty and social exclusion. Examples of activities given include:

  • activities that support individuals and groups out of exclusion and poverty.
  • publication and dissemination of good practice relating to each of the themes.
  • meetings and events aligned EY2010 objectives such as mutual learning seminars and workshops or focus groups and forums.
  • information, educational, promotional and communications campaigns and products.
  • competitions and awards.

The maximum budget for proposed activities is £125,000.  The deadline for submission of proposals is 5pm on 15 October 2009.

DWP are also inviting proposals to develop regional activities that are more focused around engaging stakeholders.

As this is European money it isn’t without its rules and bureaucracy, but if you’re interested visit the DWP's European Year 2010 pages for more information.
