Battle Lines Drawn - PCS vs Yvette Cooper

Our regular users will know that we are not in the business of fuelling dissent or making political comment around welfare to work issues, so we thought hard about publishing this story. But in the spirit of equality and diversity, we decided it was news that we should bring you.

Within hours of taking up post, it already looks like Yvette Cooper is going to have her work cut out in dealing with the welfare to work reform agenda and pushing through the changes that are already underway.

The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) have called for the new Secretary of State for Work & Pensions to put an end to the government's welfare reform agenda. The union have called James Purnell’s handling of the reforms, “the most vicious attack on the welfare state and its recipients since its founding”. PCS has been opposed to the welfare to reform proposals from day one.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka gives scathing comment about the departure of James Purnell as well as David Freud. He states that the PCS “will be seeking a meeting at the earliest opportunity to talk about the alternatives.”

There are clearly political games being played in many arenas, which are not likely to abate in the coming months, but we thought it was worth bringing this news to those of you working in the industry. Battle lines are being drawn!
