Access to Work Expansion

People with mental health problems and learning difficulties are being targeted with extra support through Access to Work.

Jonathan Shaw (Minister for Disabled People) has set new targets to guarantee 2000 people with learning disabilities and up to 1500 people with mental health conditions places on the Access to Work programme.  There is also a recognition that people working for smaller employers need to be brought into the scheme.

Mental health is seen as an ever increasing barrier to employment but less than 1% of Access to Work participants declared mental health as a condition.

The Access to Work budget is being doubled by 2013/14 to £138m to ensure more people get the help they need.  The additional support will include more personalised help, eligibility certificate for jobseekers to show what funding is available to employers and extending support for job coaches to support people with learning difficulties.
